FIVE, FOUR, THREE, TWO, ONE…WE HAVE LIFT-OFF!

PRODUCTION HAS BEGUN ON ANIMATED SPACE ADVENTURE SERIES FOR PRESCHOOLERS, “MILES FROM TOMORROWLAND,” SLATED TO PREMIERE IN 2015 ON DISNEY JUNIOR

Production has begun on the animated series “Miles From Tomorrowland,” a space adventure for preschoolers. Slated to debut in 2015 on Disney Junior channels and programming blocks around the world, the series follows the outer space voyages of young adventurer Miles and his family. The announcement was made today by Nancy Kanter, Senior Vice President, Original Programming and General Manager, Disney Junior Worldwide.

Kanter said, “We hope this series will influence a child’s interest in science and technology by introducing them at an early age to the exciting world of space exploration, how things work and what lies beyond the here and now.”

Set in outer space, the series charts the missions of the Callisto family – 7-year-old Miles, big sister Loretta and their scientist parents Phoebe and Leo, who work for the Tomorrowland Transit Authority. Each episode features two 11-minute adventure-filled stories as Miles and his family explore strange new worlds, taking young viewers and their families on a journey that fuels kids’ natural interest in the universe, and at the same time reminding them that what matters most is what lies closer to home – the family bond.

“Miles From Tomorrowland” is a production of Wild Canary in association with Disney Junior. Emmy-nominated Sascha Paladino (“Henry Hugglemonster,” “Ni Hao, Kai-lan”) is creator and executive producer and Emmy-nominated Paul Demeyer (“Duckman,” “Rugrats in Paris”) is director.

D23 a publié un court article à l'occasion des débuts de Miles from Tomorrowland sur Disney Junior ce vendredi 6 février :

Miles from Tomorrowland Blasts Off This Friday on Disney Channel

When Disney Junior’s newest series, Miles from Tomorrowland, premieres this Friday, February 6 (9 a.m. ET/PT), it will offer preschoolers a vision of the future that’s been shaped by such stellar influences as sci-fi classics like Star Wars, real-life rocket scientists from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and even Walt Disney himself. Creator and executive producer Sascha Paladino explains, “Walt Disney’s original concept of Tomorrowland was about progress, innovation.” In creating a world for young Miles Callisto and his family—who live on board a space station, carrying out a mission on behalf of the Tomorrowland Transit Authority to “connect the universe”—Paladino kept Walt’s vision in mind. “We don’t want it to feel like a retro vision of outer space,” he says.

And Miles from Tomorrowland—as well as the high-tech future in which it’s set—feels anything but retro. Parents will love the series’ STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) learning component but kids will be thrilled by the way the real science facts are incorporated—seamlessly and thrillingly—into every episode. Paladino intends for each episode to feel like a mini feature film, and he describes his hero, Miles, as a curious kid who “sees himself as the star of his own action movie every day.” Those mini action movies cross genres and create opportunities to introduce scientific concepts in unexpected ways. One example: A storyline that pays homage to old-school train heist movies is set on board a super-modern space train powered by “solar sails”—a nascent technology Paladino learned about from the show’s expert science consultants. Actual science informs every aspect of Miles from Tomorrowland, even the show’s intergalactic locations, which include real planets and moons, like Mars and Io (one of Jupiter’s moons), using animation sourced from photos taken from the Hubble Space Telescope.

The ultimate goal of Miles from Tomorrowland is to encourage kids to explore their universe, while also reinforcing the world closer to home—their families. Paladino was struck with the idea for Miles after learning that he was going to become a parent to twin boys and found himself wondering, “What would be the best adventure you could have with your family?” Miles’ family includes older sister Phoebe, a girl who codes, and Miles’ dad, Leo, a laid-back surfer/inventor. Miles’ mom, Loretta, is both the figurative and literal captain of the family’s ship, and, Paladino explains, “What better description is there for what a mom really is?”

The voice cast consists of Cullen McCarthy (Miles), Olivia Munn (Phoebe Callisto), Tom Kenny (Leo Callisto), Fiona Bishop (Loretta), and Dee Bradley Baker (Merc); but it also boasts an ensemble of recurring voices that reads like a “Who’s Who?” of sci-fi icons and includes George Takei (Star Trek), Wil Wheaton (Star Trek: The Next Generation), and Mark Hamill (Star Wars)—actors who hail from the films and series that Paladino and the filmmakers loved as children and inspired them to create Miles from Tomorrowland. But, Paladino points out, animators and filmmakers aren’t the only folks whose future paths were set the first time they learned about galaxies “far, far away.” “We heard from—literally—rocket scientists that when they were kids, seeing Star Wars and those kinds of things inspired them to do what they do,” Paladino says, adding, “And it would be amazing if one day kids who watch Miles from Tomorrowland were inspired to go into the sciences in that way.”
