Impressionnant! Y'a pas à dire, ça a quand même plus de gueule que la construction d'un RC Racer!

Pardon my Sawhorse...

Across the way from Disneyland, the aggressive construction schedule at DCA is testing the limits of how much you can get done in an operating theme park. The testing for World of Color happens nightly now, which is why DCA has changed its opening time to 9:00 AM most of the week which lets them get away with closing the park earlier in the evening so that testing can begin. Not surprisingly, there are countless rumors out there about the show being hopelessly behind schedule and with a debut date being pushed back from the late April timeline we'd originally told you about to anything from May to July.

The thing to remember here is that in any big Disney project there are always reports of massive delays and setbacks, but tenured Imagineers leading such projects calmly continue with their work while sub-contractors and theme park technicians fret about the tiny details and needlessly fuel the rumor mill.

As of now, the testing for World of Color is just about on schedule and all the major elements of the show are coming together as planned. The rainy weather this winter has caused some delays to the construction of the viewing area, but those delays are minor and the construction walls surrounding the landscaped Paradise Park viewing area will be coming down next month.

However, if there are additional delays ahead that could push the World of Color debut back by several weeks, DCA Vice President Mary Niven and her management team won't complain. They are becoming increasingly panicked over how to manage the crowds (remember those million Annual Passholders) expected to descend on DCA once the show opens.

We've told you about the plan to move the Showpass ticket distribution to the Grizzly River Run Fastpass area at first, with a thousand tickets or so per day pulled out in advance to be given to tourists staying in Anaheim's new Disney Vacation Club units and Concierge level rooms at the three hotels. The DCA Food & Beverage group is also now requesting space for a thousand people per night to be carved out of the existing viewing area so that they can sell a reserved spot to stand for the show as part of a premium priced Disneyland Resort dinner package.

But it's the potentially tens of thousands of Annual Passholders stampeding on the park each night, as well as thousands of innocent tourists caught up in the World of Color frenzy, that are causing DCA's management team to really worry. Disneyland's Cast Members have plenty of experience dealing with gridlocked walkways and slowly coaxing massive crowds from one side of the park to the other, and from one major nighttime spectacular to another. But the DCA CM's have had the luxury of a far less crowded and laid back atmosphere for years, and there's no telling how they will react to Disneyland style crowds and maxed out viewing areas. Mary Niven and her team would gladly wait for Fantasmic! to return to Disneyland on May 28th before they try and host their own big water show.

While DCA's managers are understandably nervous awaiting World of Color's debut, it would be better to just rip the band-aid off as soon as possible and work through their learning curve while they still have a working main entrance and wide open parade route. In October the massive makeover to DCA's main entrance will get underway, and Buena Vista Street construction will begin from the existing California letters all the way past the Sun Plaza.

We've been telling you the evolving plans to rip out and replace the main entrance of an existing theme park, a project that is unprecedented in the history of Disney theme parks and perhaps all theme parks in general. It looks like the plan they've finally landed on is to tackle one side of DCA's main entrance at a time, and only allow people to enter the park through the half of the facility not under construction. A temporary exit for DCA would then be built on the west end of the Soarin' Over California attraction, dumping exiting park guests out into Downtown Disney.

It's not going to be pretty for the 18 months it will exist, and it promises plenty of logistical problems with rented strollers and general confusion, but it's really the best option for TDA to finally replace DCA's cheap and basic (as well as cryptic - its supposed to represent a 3-D pop-up postcard) entrance complex from 2001 with the far more lavish and luxurious (ie Disney quality and detail) Buena Vista Street experience.

Parading: Lasseter Vetoes...

The route DCA's current and future parades take through the revamped park is also causing plenty of planning headaches for TDA, and it's a factor that weighed heavily into the sudden decision to send the Electrical Parade out to WDW this summer. DCA already had one of the longest parade routes in a Disney park, and since the Carthay Circle Theater facility was going to close off the access road that DCA parades currently use to enter the park, Anaheim's entertainment team wanted the new DCA parade route to cut through Cars Land and use a new access point at that back of that new expansion to get parades in and out of the park. That plan would effectively keep the new route about the same distance as the current route.

The route through a part of Cars Land was the plan kicking around for some time, until John Lasseter saw the proposals to add curbside streetlights to the town of Radiator Springs with the hanging light racks and speakers that modern Disney parades require. The dusty desert town of Radiator Springs in the Pixar film Cars didn't have streetlights, and John Lasseter wants the big budget Cars Land expansion to be a very literal recreation of Radiator Springs, so that people feel they are literally stepping into the world of the movie. With Cars Land and its signature Mega-E Ticket attraction Radiator Springs Racers taking up half of the Billion dollar DCA makeover budget, John Lasseter's insistence that the environment remain pure to the look of the film outweighed any operational need to run a parade route through that part of the park.

The result is that the DCA parade route will now be avoiding Cars Land entirely and heading along the periphery of the Buena Vista Street entrance, and then into the Hollywoodland section of the park and back towards Tower of Terror to get backstage. That makes for an extremely long parade route, and a future challenge to any parade designer who will need to keep dancers high stepping, costumed characters perky, and float batteries sufficiently charged for an extra 10 or 15 minutes of performance time.

It was from a series of discussions springing from that decree from John Lasseter that the plan to mothball the Electrical Parade until after the World of Color crowds die down and the Buena Vista Street construction is finished in 2012 recently came about. The newly lengthened DCA parade route in 2012 will require some modifications to not only the existing floats themselves, but possibly to the dance routines and staffing of any current parade.

So earlier this winter the WDW executives in Orlando made a pitch to borrow the Electrical Parade for a bargain price during that period and use it to try and duplicate the success Disneyland had last summer with the Nightastic! promotion. The Anaheim executives are insisting that Orlando only gets the parade for just under two years, and the current agreement has the parade being shipped back to Disneyland just after Easter vacation of 2012.

Apparently Walt Disney World is rather infamous amongst Anaheim Cast Members for not maintaining their attractions, equipment and facilities to Disneyland standards, and the Anaheim entertainment team is rather nervous about sending their newly refurbished floats out to Florida. But at least the plan frees up some storage space for them as the DCA float warehouse get reworked during the Cars Land construction.

DISNEY'S WORLD OF COLOR & PARADISE PARK
Construction walls around the upcoming Little Mermaid ride and the new Paradise Park area keep getting shuffled around as pavement is replaced to match its new surroundings.

The construction wall corridor between the Paradise Park and Little Mermaid construction sites is still open, it's just a little harder to find for the time being.

Paradise Park construction continues, as construction crews bring all the pieces of the Victorian-styled early 20th century public park setting together.

The boardwalk is being installed on the lower level of the new seaside park.

The new trellises are being painted the trademark Paradise Pier teal. Too bad they didn't completely ditch the teal when they started the Paradise Pier remodel with Toy Story Midway Mania.

Park fences are being painted green.

Work continues on the World of Color platform.

Disney released a video showing how Pixar animation will be incorporated into the new show, which included a couple sneak peeks at late-night World of Color testing.

Views of construction from Mickey's Fun Wheel

The new interactive play fountain should be a great centerpiece for Paradise Park

Rumor has it that the flowerbeds in Paradise Park have water fountains built-in, which could potentially play a role in the upcoming World of Color show.

The new Paradise Park stage:

THE LITTLE MERMAID & CARS LAND
It seems like a good majority of the Little Mermaid ride's foundation work is done and ready to go.

It'll be exciting to see vertical construction get underway in the next few months.

The pavement work near the Palace of Fine Arts rotunda is surrounded by construction walls.

On the other side of the property in the former Timon Parking Lot, work continues Cars Land's upcoming Radiator Springs Racers E-Ticket.

SILLY SYMPHONY SWINGS
Back on Paradise Pier, the Silly Symphony Swings project continues...

Views of Swings construction from the S.S. rustworthy water play area are now obscured by a new tree in the area.

Some of the support accents have been painted...

...while others have not.

DISNEY'S WORLD OF COLOR & PARADISE PARK
Nightly light and fountain testing in Paradise Bay is now routine as it gets closer to World of Color's late-spring debut.

In Paradise Park, the new lighthouse has been hit-and-miss with its shimmering LED lighting in the evenings, but it seems like the kinks have been worked out.

It's really quite nice at night, and the LED lighting actually shimmers in a sort of magical way. Never mind that this is supposed an early 20th century seaside public park, the modern-day LED lighting here is pretty special.

During the day, work continues on the rest of Paradise Park as the Resort's horticulture team has moved in to bring some much-needed greenery to the park.

THE LITTLE MERMAID & CARS LAND
Construction continues on the new Little Mermaid E-Ticket ride coming to Paradise Pier next year.

SILLY SYMPHONY SWINGS & RED CAR TROLLEY
Construction continues on the new boardwalk queue for the Silly Symphony Swings.

And over in the Hollywood Pictures Backlot, work continues on the new tracks for the upcoming Red Car Trolley, which is set to open in 2012.

THE LITTLE MERMAID & CARS LAND
Work on the Little Mermaid foundation continues...

Over in Cars Land, a crane is up to start work on the towering Radiator Springs rock work.

SILLY SYMPHONY SWINGS & RED CAR TROLLEY
A crane has also moved into the Silly Symphony Swings site as construction continues on that project.

New trees for much-needed shade have been going in around the Swings

Over in the Hollywood Pictures Backlot, brick pavers are now being laid down Hollywood Blvd. around the new Red Car Trolley tracks.

A look at Trolley work new the Tower of Terror:

PARKING STORY
Disney opened the new Toy Story Parking Lot on Friday, adding over 2,500 new parking spots for theme park guests. The OC Register's Around Disney Blog shared more information on the new lot and created a great interactive map showing the location of the lot in relation to the theme parks and other Resort parking.

New Disneyland Resort parking lot opens
The parking lot was built on land Disney bought 12 years ago with the intention of constructing a future theme park. For now, Disney has an agreement with the city to run a parking lot there for up to 10 years.

The lot, called Toy Story, sits east of the Anaheim Convention Center on Harbor Boulevard south of Katella Avenue. The lot will have 2,678 new spaces, said Suzi Brown, a Disneyland Resort spokeswoman. Another 1,000 spots were already there.

Regular-car parking will cost $14, the same as at other Disney lots, Brown said. Visitors can take free shuttle buses to the parks. The lot is expected to be open every day. [FULL STORY]

Around Disney also had an interesting story on laid-off bus drivers being re-employed by Disney to shuttle guests to and from the new Toy Story lot:

Laid-off drivers hired for new Disney lot
At least 15 laid-off bus drivers are going back behind the wheel of the public vehicles that they used to run.

But in their new jobs, they will shuttle visitors to and from Disney theme parks — all paid by Disney.

For its new parking lot that opens Friday, Disney arranged to hire some laid-off drivers and lease public buses that were out-of service because of budget cuts by the Orange County Transportation Authority.

George Kalogridis, the Disneyland Resort president, got the idea after reading about cutbacks at the transportation agency. He knew that Disney was about to contract for shuttles for the upcoming lot on Harbor Boulevard, so he asked his staff to look into using OCTA’s buses and possibly their out-of-work drivers.

“We had a need. There was an opportunity,” Kalogridis said. [FULL STORY]

As the World Turns

World of Color is obviously the topic on most everyone’s mind. The most rabid fans will get a better look at that snazzy new custom-built viewing area this Friday when the construction walls are finally removed. You won’t be allowed to stroll through the terraced viewing area this Friday however, as barricades staffed by perky DCA “Ambassadors” will be placed along the edges of the new park. But with the walls down, it will give Paradise Pier a much more open look while allowing the Imagineers to finish up the final details on this rather handsome looking area.

The young shrubs in the planters, which were purposely chosen varieties with prickly leaves and thorny vines to keep folks from climbing through them at showtime, all still need a full year to grow in and look better. And you don’t think they chose the scalloped and pointed fence tops just for the Victorian era theme, do you? Those are there to prevent people from sitting and standing on the railings during the show. But, when the barricades and smiling Ambassadors go away on April 9th, you’ll be able to finally enter and inspect some of the infrastructure built into this area that’s going to wow World of Color viewers later this spring.

The timing of the grand opening of World of Color is giving Team Disney Anaheim (TDA) planners fits, and the Imagineers are trying to use every political game in the book to buy some more testing time from them. There was an easy willingness from both TDA and Imagineering (WDI) to push the grand opening back from the originally planned last weekend in April to avoid hosting nightly shows in May when Annual Passholder blockout dates were practically nonexistent.

The thought of a million Annual Passholders descending on the park in the 40 days before their summer blockout dates begin created images of traffic gridlock all around Anaheim and pandemonium at the DCA entrance if they had to shut the gates. The DCA team was also happy to have the return of Fantasmic to fall back on in late May, in an attempt to give them more breathing room at night. (Funny how Disneyland’s crowd control Cast Members deal with insane crowd levels and gridlocked walkways almost nightly, but DCA’s team is still a bit gun-shy about joining the big leagues.)

It’s important to note that the testing and fine tuning of all of that show equipment in the lagoon and the viewing area is still going pretty much according to schedule. There has yet to be a major problem or some unforeseen issue erupt out of nowhere, like Murphy the infamous Fantasmic dragon last summer. Plenty of tweaking and testing new concepts is happening during those late night programming sessions, but for the most part this massive new show is coming together as designed.

Does anybody know what time it is?

What has TDA the most concerned is picking the right time for the show’s grand opening that limits the ability of most Annual Passholders to descend on the Resort in droves, while at the same time getting the most marketing bang for their buck from the local media. As of this writing, the date that TDA is most likely to keep as World of Color’s grand premiere is Thursday, June 10th. That date, while not yet set in stone, happens to be the first of the weekday blockouts for a majority of the local Annual Passholders, the SoCal and SoCal Select categories. Pushing it back to June 10th also allows them to piggyback on the Nightastic kickoff, while minimizing the remaining days available to AP’s before the summer becomes entirely blocked out for a majority of AP’s in late June.

That evening also happens to be a Grad Nite for the Resort, but just like last year’s Nightastic media event held on a busy Grad Nite, the Anaheim special events team can work around the hyper teenagers arriving to begin their graduation party in the middle of all the media frenzy. The current plan for June 10th would have DCA closing early, while the media event is held in Paradise Pier and the grads at the extra-cost Grad Nite Blast Off event are kept in the northern half of the park. This is just for the official grand opening of course, as there will be plenty of soft openings in the nights leading up to the formal opening.

Whenever and however they finally debut World of Color later this spring, it’s the daily operation of this show that is also going to offer some rather unique headaches for a park that has never seen event crowds quite big enough to fill the bleachers for an afternoon motorcross demonstration, let alone a 9,000 space viewing area. We’d told you about the Showpass ticketing concept that the Vice President of DCA, Mary Niven, has been mulling over. They are going forward with that plan, to be based out of the current Grizzly River Rapids Fastpass machines for at least the first summer.

And most nights through Labor Day weekend they plan on performing two shows per night, the first at 9:00 P.M. and the second will start just after official park closing time at 10:15 P.M., with both shows likely offering Showpass. But it’s the queuing and staging process for those thousands of Showpass ticket holders each evening that offers logistical nightmares for DCA. The current thinking is that with the Electrical Parade safely shipped out to Florida for the next two years, they will use the Sunshine Plaza area and the parade route as the queuing area where Showpass holders are supposed to report in the early evening.

If Mary’s team goes with their current plan, an army of crowd control CM’s will corral all Showpass ticket holders into that area an hour before showtime. That plaza will have a predictable iPod DJ perched above playing family friendly pop music and trying to build camaraderie and happy vibes amongst the crowds that will soon be herded down the parade route by crowd control and then elbow their way into the best possible spot in the lagoon viewing area. This tactic is both a logistical crowd control tool by park operations and part of an attempt by WDI to not allow the viewers for the second show to hang out around the lagoon during the first show, lest they see from a bad angle how the show plays out and what surprises it has in store for them. If they do go with this overwrought process, it promises to create plenty of headaches for the CM’s, not to mention some very confused visitors.

There’s no word yet on whether WDI will be positioning low-ranking Imagineers around the Pier each night to force everyone to avert their eyes from the first showing of the evening. Although there really won’t be much reason to be in Paradise Pier if you’re not seeing World of Color, as Steve Davison is insisting that all Paradise Pier attractions be shut down and silenced an hour before the first World of Color performance begins to provide the perfect atmosphere for his show.

World of Color promises to be not just a massive and game-changing night spectacular for the American theme park industry, but it also promises to throw some pretty nasty operational problems at DCA each night. We’ll keep you updated on how it’s all going to pan out, of that you can be sure.

The other side of the World

Aside from World of Color, the Paradise Pier area also has plenty of other debuts big and small headed its way, as well as new construction and a few more attractions to be retired. First up will be the reopening of the Golden Zephyr this weekend, one of the few Pier attractions that will go relatively untouched from a design standpoint owing to its look that is already old-fashioned. Also this Friday, a big crane will arrive at the Little Mermaid construction site to begin loading the steel framing that will be going vertical the following week. Then on Friday, April 16th the parade route will return to Paradise Pier with the walls either gone around World of Color viewing, or pushed back over at the Little Mermaid construction site.

By May the speakers all around the Paradise Pier lagoon will begin playing the new area music for that section of DCA. Gone will be the organ-grinder versions of 1960’s pop music, and in will be a toe-tapping medley of West Coast Ragtime. The new music is said to be jazzier than the early ragtime music played on Main Street USA, as the new Pier theme evokes the growing West Coast of the 1910’s and 20’s rather than the more conservative Midwest of 1905 that Main Street represents. Shortly after the new music debuts, eagle eyed riders on Mickey’s Fun Wheel should also get the chance to see the first car cycling over on the Radiator Springs Racers short test track, as the Imagineers hope to get their first test laps going by the second week of May. And finally this spring, the Silly Symphony Swings will open formally just in time for Memorial Day Weekend.

The Blue Sky Cellar was originally slated to close for a week in mid April to receive its next update all geared towards The Little Mermaid attraction, but WDI will now wait on that until the Resort nails down the exact date of World of Color’s opening. But by June, there should be a new exhibit in the Blue Sky Cellar detailing the work on that big attraction that has been budgeted at just over 100 Million Dollars. Even though structural steel for the show building won’t be arriving on Disney property until next Monday, the lavishly themed building is going to piece together rather quickly and the Little Mermaid complex is right on schedule and currently planned to debut next spring at a media event the third week of May, 2011.

With those additions coming to the Pier area this spring, the look and feel of the area will mostly stand pat through the summer. But in September, it will be lights out for some rather noticeable, if not particularly popular, Paradise Pier attractions that have been there since 2001.

The day after Labor Day, the S.S. Rustworthy will be mercifully decommissioned and torn out, and the Maliboomer will bleed out the air from its launch tubes for the last time. The S.S. Rustworthy, an excellent example of Imagineering’s earliest public display of fake bird poop, will be deomolished to become part of the dining patio for the new Boardwalk Pizza and Pasta restaurant replacing Pizza Oom Mow Mow. At the same time, the mothballed McDonalds Burger Invasion next door will begin its transformation into the healthier Paradise Garden Grille.

The Maliboomer will be dismantled throughout September, and that charmless and cheap cement launch pad it uses will be turned into a small park with shade trees and benches. Then, when the new fiscal year starts for Disney in early October, Mulholland Madness will close to begin its seven month transformation into Goofy’s Sky School. That entire back corner of what was once the garish Route 66 area of Paradise Pier will all reopen in mid May 2011 as the far more elegant Paradise Garden area.

You've got a space near me

Obviously there’s plenty going on inside DCA this spring, but the impact of all of these new offerings will be felt all over the Resort area. We’ve detailed extensively in past updates why it’s such a hassle to park the car and fight the crowds at the trams to get to the park. However, a big step ahead appears to have been made with the new Toy Story Parking Lots. The 3,600 spaces that are now open 7 days per week are working pretty well thus far. The circuitous bus trip can take up to 15 minutes inbound to the park, but with plenty of buses on hand it certainly beats the maddening crowds and ridiculously frustrating trams to the Mickey & Friends structure.

Even the idea to sell theme park tickets in that parking lot is resonating with day tripping visitors, as around 1,000 tickets per day are now being sold in that lot even though it’s rarely more than half full of cars. Disney is still trying to piece together as much land as possible around their current Pumbaa parking lot (and a few new parcels have fallen into Disney’s hands very recently) so they can build their next mega-structure we’ve told you about. And then of course there’s that GardenWalk foreclosure auction on April 8th that TDA will be keeping an eye on. But any new parking structure is still years away, so let’s hope the Toy Story Parking Lot is able to soak up the World of Color crowds this spring and summer.

Disney's California Adventure
Paradise Park is coming along nicely and, by Saturday of this week, the walls should be coming down. However, guests will not be able to venture in for another week or so.

We are really looking forward to seeing the bay again without all those walls, how about you?

World of Color is nearly ready to go.

Although World of Color is likely to officially debut June 11th, look for preview opportunities prior to that.

More details from the show should start showing up in testing very soon.
Grand Californian guests may have a few extra treats when they look out of their windows at night.

The Little Mermaid will begin vertical construction any day now

The foundation is ready to support vertical construction of the building set to open next year!

Cars Land

Enjoy the view while you can. Show building construction will soon obscure much of this view

This gate by the Tortilla Factory will give way to Radiator Springs

Silly Symphony Swings

Silly Symphony Swings has received some shade structures and roofing for the queue

The structure around the swing platform.

The planters around the swing area have begun to take shape
